Kivu 3 – A Bold Taste from the Heart of Congo
Roast: Dark
Process: Natural
Tasting Notes: Brownie, Peach, Blueberry Jelly
Brew Method: Filter, AeroPress, Espresso, Cold Brew, French Press
In the lush highlands of South Kivu, where volcanic soil meets abundant rainfall and equatorial sun, something extraordinary is growing. This naturally processed Arabica comes from the Katana washing station, perched at 1,693 meters above sea level and run by the Virunga Coffee Company—a project founded to uplift smallholder farmers and showcase the hidden potential of Congolese coffee.
Coffee has deep roots in the Congo. Over a century ago, the region’s wild-growing Robusta was so widespread it earned the nickname “Congo coffee.” In 1895, botanists called it the “second Brazil” for its coffee-growing promise. Today, that promise is being fulfilled—by farmers who grow Typica variety coffee organically and with care, under the shade of trees, using sustainable practices passed down through generations.
This Kivu 3 lot is naturally processed on raised beds at Katana, one of eight quality-focused stations operated by Virunga. The result is a clean, fruit-forward cup with rich body, layered complexity, and a story that speaks of revival, resilience, and world-class potential.
